This one is a bit broader and more inclusive, but also makes the boundaries between coins and token somewhat fuzzier. Here, the main distinction between the two types of digital assets is that \u003Cstrong>coins are native to their \u003Ca href=\"/en-gb/learn/blockchain/what-is-a-blockchain/\">blockchains\u003C/a>,\u003C/strong> meaning that they were created at a given blockchain's launch, to be used specifically on said blockchain. \u003Cstrong>Tokens\u003C/strong>, by contrast, \u003Cstrong>are created on top of existing blockchains\u003C/strong> that already have a native currency.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Think about bitcoin and ether, for example: they were created on their own native blockchains, \u003Ca href=\"/en-gb/learn/cryptocurrency-guide/what-is-bitcoin-btc/\">Bitcoin\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"/en-gb/learn/cryptocurrency-guide/what-is-ethereum-eth/\">Ethereum\u003C/a>, respectively. Tokens have a different story. Many tokens have been created on an existing blockchain with its own cryptocurrency, such as Ethereum, whose native cryptocurrency is ether. As a result, ether is required to fuel transactions involving these tokens.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The tricky part with the alternative distinction is distinguishing between coins and tokens in terms of functionality. This is because the methods of using coins and tokens often overlap, which is partly due to the extensive versatility of tokens.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2>Versatility of tokens\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Though their functionality is not limited to payments alone, coins have no further categorization that would distinguish one type of coin from another.
