Philion graduated from Cass Business School with a degree in investment and financial risk management. He then earned a master’s degree in machine learning from University College London (UCL), where Rowan also earned the same degree. Usher also attended UCL, earning a PhD in quantum computing.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The initial Flare whitepaper was published in August 2020, laying out the team’s goals for the network and introducing its token—at that time called Spark. Flare’s original intent was to bring smart contract capability to networks that didn’t have them, like Ripple’s XRP Ledger. The whitepaper focused on Flare’s ability to increase the functionality of the XRP Ledger, and how to bring more functionality and interoperability to the XRP token.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>In 2019, the Flare team received a significant initial investment from Xpring, the investment arm of Ripple Labs. In 2021, Flare raised $11.3 million in a funding round with participation from multiple venture capital firms like Digital Currency Group as well as individual investors like Do Kwan and Charlie Lee.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>An updated whitepaper (Flare v2.0) was published in December 2022, officially renaming the Spark token to FLR and refining multiple technological aspects of the project.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2>How does Flare Network work?\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>The Flare Network is a \u003Ca href=\"/learn/blockchain/what-is-a-layer-1-blockchain/\">layer 1\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"/learn/crypto-101/what-is-proof-of-stake-pos/\">Proof-of-Stake (PoS)\u003C/a> blockchain that leverages the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to support smart contracts and host \u003Ca href=\"/learn/crypto-101/what-are-decentralized-applications-dapps/\">decentralized applications (dapps)\u003C/a>. It ensures that the \u003Cem>state\u003C/em> of another (\u003Cem>connected\u003C/em>) blockchain is reliably recreated on Flare using decentralized technology. It uses two tools to achieve this:\u003C/p>\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Request-commit-reveal (RCR) protocol\u003C/strong> – Users can \u003Cem>request\u003C/em> information from another blockchain, which is \u003Cem>verified\u003C/em> by users (called attestation providers) who then provide \u003Cem>attestations\u003C/em>, or proofs, using a cryptographic tool called a Merkle tree.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Branching protocol\u003C/strong> – After data is requested and verified using the RCR protocol, the branching protocol checks whether more than 50% of the attestation providers agree, helping decentralize the process of data acquisition.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ol>\n\u003Cp>Through this process, data from other blockchains—such as transactions and information about which assets are held in specified crypto wallets—can be brought to Flare and recreated for use in the network’s native dapps.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch3>Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO)\u003C/h3>\n\u003Cp>Part of the challenge of working with blockchain data is that, even though decentralization may be reliable \u003Cem>on-chain\u003C/em>, interacting with any \u003Cem>off-chain\u003C/em> data can be a weak point. In order to gather data from outside the network, \u003Cstrong>oracles\u003C/strong> are used. These tools pull information from various sources and provide them back to the blockchain.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Flare uses its own oracle, the FTSO, which is a collection of \u003Cstrong>data providers\u003C/strong> that provide information to be used on-chain. For instance, the price of \u003Ca href=\"/learn/cryptocurrency-guide/what-is-bitcoin-btc/\">BTC\u003C/a> or XRP may be important for a \u003Ca href=\"/learn/web3/what-is-decentralized-finance-defi/\">DeFi\u003C/a> protocol on Flare, and this information must be fetched in the most reliable way possible.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Data providers must stake FLR tokens to become providers, which can be slashed (or confiscated) if they act maliciously in their capacity as network validators. Additionally, other users can delegate their FLR to data providers they trust. Data providers and their delegators then earn rewards based on the accuracy of the data. This incentivizes honest estimates and thus, theoretically, the most accurate possible data.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch3>Songbird network\u003C/h3>\n\u003Cp>Songbird is Flare’s canary (or test) network. Borrowed from \u003Ca href=\"/learn/cryptocurrency-guide/what-is-polkadot-dot/\">Polkadot’s\u003C/a> canary network, Kusama, Songbird works as a fully functional blockchain and exists to develop new features for Flare.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Launched in 2021, Songbird has its own governance system and its own native token, SGB.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2>How is the FLR token used?\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>FLR is used to incentivize use of the FTSO, as collateral in third-party dapps, to participate in governance, to secure the network through \u003Ca href=\"/learn/blockchain/what-is-staking/\">staking\u003C/a>, and to pay transaction fees.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch3>Token distribution\u003C/h3>\n\u003Cp>There are 100 billion FLR, with 58% of them allocated to the community, including direct distribution to users via airdrops.
